Leaning in from sea. I ate the day
Deliberately, that its tang
Might quicken me all into verb, pure verb.”
– Seamus Heaney
In my first year of Graduate school, I met Seamus Heaney. There were about 6 of us and we sat in the basement of a college bar. He didn’t answer the questions we asked him– mainly about writing and process. He wanted to talk about war and history and memory and meaning. I began to get the feeling that we weren’t in the room with him. That we were just apparitions in front of him, young and transparent, and he was reaching through us to grasp the past.
