A woman stopped me on the stairs today. “Are those shoes comfortable?” I look at her face to get a clue of her tone. It is friendly, smiling. Yes, I say, without hesitation.  The front of the shoe is squared but still pointed and black patent leather. I put out a foot gently balancing on one leg. We both look at my extended leg.
